Located on the Armorican Atlantic coast, the Gulf of Morbihan, "little sea" in Breton, gave its name to the department.

This small inland sea, closed by the Rhuys peninsula, covers some 100 km². A narrow passage, where the currents are violent, allows communication with the ocean.

Legend has it that there is one island per day of the year but only about thirty are inhabited. Its mild, sunny climate and the beauty of its jagged coasts make the Gulf of Morbihan a renowned tourist destination.

Carnac and its alignments

6000 years old, the megalithic site of Carnac is a high place of European prehistory.

These some 3000 menhirs are spread over 40 hectares and 4 kilometers long according to an architectural organization. The whole of Carnac constitutes one of the first monumental stone architectures in Europe.

The sites are open to the public in winter from October 1 to March 31 and accessible in summer exclusively for conference visits.
